Pill & District Food Hub has celebrated its one year anniversary as it continues to provide support to one of the most deprived areas in North Somerset.

Since opening on December 9, 2022, the Hub has shared an average of 340kg of food per week to families from diverse backgrounds, including those on a low income, single parent families, and those receiving disability benefits or state pension.

Hub Coordinator, Jo, spoke about the reach of the service: "The Hub provides for residents facing food insecurity and for those in food crisis in the area of Pill, Ham Green and Easton-in-Gordano.

"It's a no judgement service, no vouchers are needed and no specific criteria have to be met, apart from living locally.

"The Hub is aimed at reducing the stigma and fear that some feel when asking for help."

The pop up food market operates every Friday afternoon, assisting up to 46 households with fresh, chilled, and store cupboard food, primarily sourced from FareShare.

Customers are encouraged to contribute £3 and can take what they require at around the value of £20.

This service is not intended to supersede a full shop but to aid people in eating healthy and trimming their food expenses to manage with other financial struggles such as heating costs.

Benefactors have disclosed what the service means to them.

An anonymous customer said: "I’m on Universal Credit and Pip.

"This service gets us through the week and is a great help.

"It keeps us going, we would not get by without it.

"Really amazing selection, friendly and supportive."

North Somerset Times: Cashes Green Community Centre will have a weekly foodbank

Having incorporated the Pill Foodbank into their services, the Hub also dishes out bags of complimentary emergency food for local individuals in 'food crisis'. They can be reached for help six days a week through a phone call, text or email.

To commemorate Christmas, the Food Hub has also rolled out its 'Everyone Deserves Christmas' appeal.

It aims to provide gifts and food for those in need, linking up with two local schools and local churches to support the households that need it.

The Hub strongly relies on essential funds and food donations.

Items like toiletries, cleaning products, shower gel, shampoo, kitchen roll, baby food and nappies, as well as tinned, dry or packaged food are just some of what the Hub accepts.
