A SHOP in Wells and another one in North Somerset are in the running for a national title.

Linguistic experts at language learning platform, Babbel (www.babbel.com), have scoured social media platforms TikTok, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook to shortlist the UK shops with clever or amusing puns in their names - that are most frequently celebrated on social media.

Babbel has whittled down a shortlist of the 120 most popular shop name puns, sub-divided into 12 regions across the UK.

And among the contenders in the South West are:

  • The Grape and the Good, a wine shop in Broad Street, Wells;
  • and Alterknit Universe knitting supplies shop, in Main Road, Cleeve.

(Just imagine if the two businesses were run by the same person, then we'd have been able to tell you, 'You heard knit through the grapevine').

To celebrate the play on words, Babbel is inviting members of the public nationwide to vote for their favourite HERE.

Some of the other South West contenders are:

The Hound of the Basket Meals, a food van;

The Loovre art gallery in old public toilets;

The Pursuit of Hoppiness, a craft beer shop;

and Game of Cones ice cream shop.
