IN MARCH 2014, Clevedon's seafront became a hive of activity as hordes of screaming One Direction fans flocked to see the band film the music video to the song, You and I.

The band, made up of Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne, spent March 24 on the Victorian landmark filming shots for the music video.

The boys donned thick coats and hats between takes and were even spotted hugging hot water bottles to try to stave off the effects of the cold, blustery Bristol Channel weather.

They were also seen kicking a football about and jogging up and down the pier to keep warm.

Crowds gathered opposite the pier and along the promenade as fans tried to get a glimpse of their idols.

There were also a number of paparazzi photographers set-up with their long lenses in Pier Copse to get some shots of the boys.

Teenagers and young children were all as excited as each other to know their favourite band, which was formed during the 2010 series of ITV’s The X Factor, had come to town.

Speaking at the time, Clevedon mum Charlotte Wait said: “I brought my children here as a surprise after school - they couldn’t believe it."

Ellie, Ruby, Chloe and Lauren had rushed to the seafront after lessons at Mary Elton Primary School. They said: “When we found out they were here we thought it was amazing. We were so excited but had to wait for school to finish first.”

Bosses at Clevedon Pier were also delighted the Grade I-listed landmark had been chosen for such a prominent event.

Speaking about the event in 2014, the chairman of trustees, Simon Talbot-Ponsonby said: “We were delighted they chose Clevedon Pier because they must recognise it as a special place.

“They only contacted us about 10 days ago and we actually agreed it all last week before they would even tell us who the band was.

“This has put Clevedon on the map and hopefully more people may visit the pier to walk the same boards that One Direction have."

The band has now split up, but residents won't forget the day they saw One Direction in Clevedon.
