CLEVEDON'S Save Our Seafront campaign group have questioned the reason behind the installation of new parklets on Hill Road.
Parklets are designed to provide additional pedestrian amenities, such as seating or bike racks, to a public space, usually in urban areas.
Cathy Hawkins, a founder member of Save Our Seafront (SOS) says: “It is a shame that NSC did not look at the definition of a parklet, as Hill Road is not urban or in need of more outdoor space with several parks nearby.
"What Hill Road needs is more parking to attract visitors, not one-way streets making is difficult to get there and a one-way cycle lane that few cyclists ever use."
A spokesperson from North Somerset Council said: "The parklets are part of the Clevedon improvements scheme at Hill Road and The Beach. They were always part of the plans and consultation was carried out.
"The majority of local traders were supportive of the introduction of more outdoor seating for businesses and encouraging a cafe culture. The parklets can help boost economic growth through more seating for businesses and encouraging people to stay longer in the area.
"They also add greenery and are an attractive addition to the street.
"Even with the parklets, there is more car parking in the area overall than before the changes.
"North Somerset Council has commissioned an independent review into the scheme. Independent experts AECOM will review changes made to Hill Road and The Beach after criticism from a number of residents and businesses.
"The review process will begin with a public meeting to kickstart community involvement on Thursday, July 20, at 7pm at Clevedon Community Centre, Princes Road."
Cathy added: "We are pleased that North Somerset has announced an independent review will be conducted into the whole scheme and a public meeting.
"However, we are disappointed that this review doesn’t sound very independent as the invitation to attend says this scheme is ‘intended to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists on Hill Road and The Beach in Clevedon’ because SOS were not aware of any issues with pedestrian or cycling access to these areas before the changes were made.
"This sounds like justification for a crazy scheme before the jury is out.”
