Tickenham and Nailsea see installation of new T-pylons

NATIONAL Grid has installed new T-pylons around Tickenham and Nailsea.

Unlike the traditional pylon design, the new pylons have a single pole and cross-shaped arms.

The pylons have been constructed as part of the Hinkley Connection Project, a 57km high-voltage electricity line that will connect six million properties to low-carbon energy sources.

It is hoped that the £900 million project will help the UK meet its net zero target by 2050.

This will mean that we use more sustainable energy sources and reduce our carbon emissions, with any carbon that is released into the atmosphere being reabsorbed by our oceans and forests.

The plan is to construct another 80 T-pylons by 2024. 

However, there has been some concern amongst residents. One local said: "[The pylons] are clear for all to see now, another is going up by the Star pub in Tickenham, one went up by the Causeway recently also. 

"The houses by the Star are badly affected as well as the Furze House and the listed building at Stone Edge Batch.

"The full scale of the pylons can be seen as you drop down Tickenham Hill towards the Clevedon Road junction, another dramatic view is as you go across the Causeway as you will see a ‘highway’ of pylons going right into the distance.

"I’m sure that a lot of/most people expected that the cables would be put underground in this sensitive area, it’s really quite shocking to see as the pylons are right by houses."

A spokesperson for the National Grid said: "We consulted with the local community on the Hinkley Connection Project for five years, listening carefully to the views of local people.

"We received more than 11,000 pieces of feedback with most people showing a preference for T-pylons over lattice pylons. Standing at around 35m they're a third shorter and have a smaller base than the 48m traditional lattice structures.

"Following our extensive consultation, a Development Consent Order was submitted, and permission was granted by the Secretary of State.

"The project, which will also see 249 pylons removed from the landscape and underground cables laid through Mendips Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, will connect six million homes and businesses to low carbon energy from Hinkley Point C and other sources."
