THE owner of a hairdressing salon in Congresbury has voiced their concerns over the new parking restrictions outside their store.
Broad Street Hair and Beauty can be found on 4 Broad Street and describes itself as 'North Somerset's premier hairdressing group'.
Wayne Hill, the owner of the salon, said: "I've had my business for 30 years and without exception, there has probably been two or three times that there has ever been an issue with parking.
"It's normally just because someone has parked somewhere that's a stupid place to park.
"The parish council, in their infinite wisdom, decided to put yellow lines down the street. We are a tiny rural community and they have taken away five parking spaces.
"Not only have they taken away five parking spaces, but they have also put a parking space right on the corner of a main road, so people have to swing in to a parking space. It's very dangerous.
"Where they have put the double yellow lines is outside all the amenities, such as the chemist, the cafe, the hairdressers. Customers are just dumping their cars on the corners, which is causing more of an issue than we have ever had before.
"In the period of time that the double yellow lines have been put down, which is nearly two weeks, I have lost just over £1,800 worth of business.
"People go to park their car, see there's nowhere to park so just cancel their appointments and leave.
"All of us on the street are losing money because people just can't park."
A spokesperson from Congresbury Parish Council said: “The change in parking restrictions to Broad Street were outlined in our Neighbourhood Plan (2019-2036) and following a consultation process with the residents and business owners during May 2021 the Broad Street parking plan was sent to North Somerset Council in June 21 and implemented in April 2023.”
According to the North Somerset Council website, Congresbury Neighbourhood Plan aims to allocate land for:
- Housing and employment.
- Protection of local green spaces, countryside, and community facilities.
- Improvements to cycle routes and highways.
- Protection and enhancement of the historic environment.
