A CLUB for retired and semi-retired men in Backwell has elected a new chairman, Gordon Brassington. 

Gordon has taken over from Ian Wilson as the chairman of the local Probus club.

The club is affliliated to the Probus national and international association and provides regular opportunities for its members to meet other people with similar interests, make new friends and expand their interests. 

A spokesperson said: "The club is open to any retired or semi-retired man who is looking for a regular social meeting with like minded men.

"We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month at the West Backwell Bowling club.

"Meetings start at 10am with coffee, followed by a range of interesting talks on a variety of subjects by different speakers.

"Social functions are arranged throughout the year to which wives and partners are invited."

The Probus organisation was started in 1965 by the Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City. The title is an abbreviation of professional and business. 

The Backwell club was founded in 1982 and has a membership of 50 (as of May 2022).
