OLD people will be able to visit a zoo in Somerset for free next month.

In a bid to help tackle loneliness and isolation in the coming winter months, popular family attraction Noah's Ark Zoo Farm will see all over 70s enter at no cost.

From December 1 to 21, the zoo in Wraxall will invite those who are of old age visit the animals in a return of the scheme for a third year running.

A spokesperson said: "This time of year can be the loneliest so we are encouraging visitors to reach out to older relatives, friends or neighbours to bring along to our zoo.

"Christmas is a time of joy and light for many but can be a lonely time, especially for older members of our community.

"Our wonderful initiative was inspired by the Age UK campaign to help make Christmas a little brighter for a lonely older person. According to the charity, almost 1.5million people feel lonelier at Christmas than at any other time of year."

Millions of people are widely expected to be pushed into poverty this winter due to the soaring cost-of-living and increase in heating and electricity costs. Experts have also warned that many older people may have to face a horrific choice between 'heating and eating'.

Noah's Ark has now created a designated warm space for December in the Food Barn which will act as a 'warm bank' where people can go and enjoy a warm drink and chat with others for company.

This area will be kept heated for visitors with special winter warmer meals cooked by the head chef. These winter warmers will include hot soups and classic favourites such as shepherd’s pie at discounted prices for pensioners.

“We are committed to welcoming and including all members of our community here at Noah’s Ark and we are looking forward to seeing lots of guests at this special time of year. We are hoping that this offer encourages those who aren’t normally able to visit us to come and enjoy a warm festive welcome and spend time with friends and family,” said managing director Larry.

Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm is open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm between December and January.

Ticket prices are seasonal and start from £11 for children and £15.75 for adults.
