ANGRY residents who are 'outraged' at works to make Clevedon's roads more cycle-friendly staged a demonstration last week.

Protesters demanded an end to a revamp scheme - which will see new cycleways and amenities for pedestrians introduced while reducing the need for vehicles in town.

Last week your Times reported the government-funded project is already overbudget by almost £200,000. North Somerset Council has blamed Brexit and the war in Ukraine for an increase in costs.

On Saturday, November 5, the members of Save Our Seafront (S.O.S) coordinated a large gathering of residents and business owners to demand the council 'stop destroying our historic seafront forever'.

In February, the group set up a petition to halt proceedings. It has now received almost 6,000 signatures.

People also held a protest in April outside the Clevedon Sailing Club to outline their fierce objection to the plans.

S.O.S member, Cathy Hawkins, said: "These plans to irrevocably change the seafront forever consist of a 400-yard cycle lane to nowhere and cause a massive reduction in seafront parking.

"We all raised hands and shouted about the reduction of parking for the elderly and disabled, young families and sea swimmers.

"Many residents have been adversely affected by the bus route change and there is a danger of cyclists travelling two ways on roads which are only one-way for cars.

"We have repeatedly asked councillors to discuss the ramifications of the scheme and have even written an alternative route, but they just don't want to know."

She added: "When the council's new leader, Cllr Steve Bridger, was elected earlier this year, he said that all towns and villages will have a say on big decisions and that the council will get better at listening to residents - no such thing has happened to us in Clevedon."

Clevedon Town Council initially approved the scheme but following huge opposition from residents, the council rescinded its support by a majority vote.

A North Somerset Council spokesperson said: "This scheme is supported by Clevedon Business Improvement District (BID) and the Pier Trust.

"The project is part of the active travel scheme which sets to improve Clevedon's access to alternative forms of travel by making areas pedestrian friendly and encouraging family and leisurely cyclists."
