A PORTISHEAD hair and beauty salon is raising awareness of hygiene poverty and has teamed up with the Hygiene Bank to help disadvantaged families across the South West.
The Hygiene Bank is a grass roots charity that believes everyone deserves a dignified life and being clean should not be a luxury.
This week is National Hygiene Week and to support this Tonic Hair and Beauty is inviting people to donate toiletries or home cleaning products via their salon for redistribution to those in need.
Nadine Johnson, who owns the salon with her sister Simone, said: “The current economic situation has had such an impact on everyone and those in financial crisis can find themselves caught between being able to heat their home, pay their rent, buy food or keep clean.
"Hygiene poverty can be shaming and can result in social isolation, which is why we have decided to try and raise awareness and offer some practical support.”
This month Tonic is taking in donations of personal care and household cleaning products, which they will deliver to the local Hygiene Bank coordinator for redistribution.
Simone said: “Tonic will of course be donating products and our customers are donating too, but we invite anyone to pop in and leave a donation. If everyone in Portishead donated just one item it would make a huge difference to a lot of people.”
Products ranging from soaps, shampoos and deodorants to disinfectants and sanitisers, can be delivered to Tonic in Combe Road, just off Portishead High Street, during salon opening hours.
