Backwell woman presented with award
A BACKWELL woman has been presented with a prestigious award for her work in the community.
Jean Routley has been given a community service award by Nailsea and Backwell Rotary Club for her outstanding contribution to the life of Backwell and the wider district.
The former Nailsea School teacher established choirs and an orchestra at the school and ran a number of musical productions.
She later took over conducting the WI Ladies Choir and has trained the group for 40 years giving two concerts a year and taking small groups to sing in local nursing and care homes.
Jean became the organist and choirmaster at St Andrew’s Church more than 30 years ago and helped to set up the church orchestra.
She has such a passion for music and spends her time teaching youngsters to play piano and organ, helps Bristol and District Organists Association to set up themes and music for services at Wells Cathedral and also finds the time to give talks on a wide range of topics from collectables, history and music and arrange the charity Christmas card sale.
Jean’s life and career have been an inspiration to thousands of people over the years and the rotary club was proud to honour her with a community service award.
