A MOTHER-of-two from Backwell is appealing to baking fans to dust off their aprons for charity.

Louise Harrison, aged 34, is holding The Great Bristol Cake Bake in Backwell to raise money for Noreen’s Kids, which helps sick children in Romania.

Louise’s mum Pat Mann, a retired GP from Yatton, has been travelling to Romania for 15 years with Children in Distress. When fellow volunteer and retired nurse Noreen O’Gorman decided to set up her own charity called Noreen’s Kids, Pat decided to help her and has now become treasurer of the appeal.

Louise, of Highdale Road, said: “Noreen visited a few families where children were dying in their own homes with no palliative care and she decided to start her own charity. My mum decided to help her out.

“They have children in hospices and children in the community that they go out regularly to see.

“I decided to support it because I like that it’s a small charity and all the money goes straight to the children. The volunteers pay for their own flights out to help them.

“At the moment they are trying to fundraise for a vehicle so they can reach more rural parts of the area.”

Louise, a self-employed graphic designer, has raised nearly 3,000 for the charity through coffee mornings and fairs.

She said: “Baking is really fashionable at the moment so this time I thought I would organise a cake bake. It’s a really fun way to get the community involved.”

A few people have already signed up to the event, which is being held at Backwell WI Hall, in Station Road, from 2-5pm on November 17.

Entrants can win prizes for the tastiest cake, the most beautiful cake, the best savoury bake, the best cupcake/muffin and the best children’s cake.

BBC presenter Alex Lovell will be judging the cakes at 3pm before the tasty treats go on sale at 3.30pm.

There are a number of prizes to be won including family tickets to attractions, spa days and cookery books.

Louise is now appealing to people to sign up to the event and asking businesses to donate prizes for the competition.

The price to enter cakes into the competition is 5 for adults and 3 for children – competitors can enter as many categories as they like.
