FORTY-FIVE years after Clevedon’s first affordable playschool was set-up, its founder is stepping down from her role.
Edith Jones started Roundabouts as an educational playschool in 1966, when nurseries were generally expensive for many to afford, setting the prices lower to enable more families to take advantage of its sessions.
After initially operating from home and a brief spell at the town’s YMCA hall, the playschool moved to a temporary building off Coleridge Vale Playing Fields.
Thirty years later, after tireless fundraising and substantial help from Clevedon Lions, 30,000 was gathered to build a new, modern building in its current Southey Road location.
In 1997, Edith stepped down from the day-to-day management of Roundabouts but remained actively involved through her role as chairman of the trustees.
As she approaches her 80th birthday next year, she has now decided to hand over the reins to a new generation.
