A Portishead pensioner is calling for more legislation against the use of mobility scooters in built-up areas after an accident in Clevedon town centre left her injured and needing to stay in hospital for almost two weeks.

Coreen Stone suffered two fractured wrists and a fractured ankle when she was struck by a man in a scooter back in February, but more than three months on is still struggling to walk.

She said: “It has totally disrupted my life.”

Coreen, aged 72, was shopping in The Triangle in Clevedon on February 19 when she was knocked over.

Mrs Stone said: “The next thing I knew, I was on the floor.

“I think I must have blacked out as the scooter and its driver was on top of me.”

Workers at nearby businesses had to rush to her aid and Mrs Stone was taken to Weston General Hospital where she spent the next 13 days.

Three months on and she is still struggling with her leg in a brace and she requires a wheelchair to travel long distances. Her arms are also still in plaster.

The injuries have left her unable to drive or take part in some of the activities she once enjoyed doing.

Mrs Stone believes greater regulation is needed after having witnessed several near misses.

She said: “Police couldn’t do anything about it because it isn’t a criminal offence.

“These people with mobility scooters often don’t have insurance.

“People should be warned because often these scooters go very fast.”
