A Portishead man will celebrate his 60th birthday spending a night alone on Denny Island to raise money for Black Nore Lighthouse.
Neil Carter will travel to the island, off Portishead’s coast, on Friday – 23 years after he first spent a night there.
He first slept on the island on the same date in 1995 to raise money for the RNLI and will mark this occasion in support of the lighthouse trust.
Bill Shier, chairman of the Black Nore Lighthouse Trust, said: “Neil’s father was a cadet at the National Nautical School next to Black Nore Point and when his father died the family had his ashes scattered from Black Nore Point.
“As Neil’s family has an affinity with Black Nore Point and the lighthouse, he would like to support our efforts to maintain it.”
The Grade II-listed lighthouse was built in 1894 to guide ships in the Severn Estuary.
It was decommissioned in September 2010.
