Archant

An award-winning musical about a dance-loving Baltimore teenager who becomes an overnight sensation is heading to Bristol.

Hairspray will transport us back to the swinging 1960s with some of the catchiest tunes from the Tony Award-winning show.

In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show.

Tracy auditions for the show and becomes an overnight success; soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way.

But disaster strikes when Tracy takes part in a peaceful march to protest racial segregation and ends up on the run from the police.

The Broadway musical won eight Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical, in 2003 and came to London’s West End in 2008.

It is based on the 1988 film of the same name which starred Divine and Ricki Lake.

Following the show’s phenomenal success, it went on to be released in 2007 as a film which starred Michelle Pfeiffer, John Travolta and Zac Efron.

The touring musical comedy will star ITV comedy legend Norman Pace with music and lyrics from Academy, Tony and Emmy Award-winning duo Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman.

Hairspray will be at the Bristol Hippodrome, in St Augustines Parade, at 7.30pm from March 5-10.

There will also be two performances on March 7 and 10.

Tickets, priced £17.50-66, are available here or from 08448 717627.

The Times has teamed up with the Hippodrome to offer two lucky readers a pair of tickets to the show.

To enter the competition, simply answer the following question: Which American city is Tracy from?

Send your answer along with your name, address and telephone number to Hairspray competition, Weston, Worle & Somerset Mercury, 32 Waterloo Street, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1LW or alternatively enter online at www.northsomersettimes.co.uk by 10am on February 22.

Usual Archant rules apply and the editor’s decision is final. By entering this competition you agree to be contacted by the theatre.
