One of the most eagerly-awaited shows of the year will open at the Bristol Hippodrome next week.
War Horse opens on October 18 as the children’s book by Michael Morpurgo is given a theatrical makeover.
The story focuses on a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey and is set against the backdrop of World War One.
Morpurgo said: “After a few months rest, out at pasture, Joey, the War Horse and his great team from the National Theatre, is touring the UK again, taking their show all over the country, to towns and cities, many of them places War Horse has not been seen before.
“I’m so pleased this is happening; that more people will have the chance to enjoy this unique theatrical event.”
The show features ground-breaking puppetry by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings galloping horses to the stage.
War Horse was published in 1982 and is still one of Morpurgo’s most successful works. However, it won a legion of new fans when Stephen Spielberg created a film version in 2011.
Morpurgo was not convinced at first about how his story could be brought to life on stage through horse puppets, and said he had ‘remained doubtful but hopeful’.
Despite his initial concerns, the play has been a success since it opened in London 10 years ago, with Laurence Olivier Awards and Tony Awards proving its popularity.
War Horse will be shown at the Hippodrome until November 11 at 7.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays. There will be 2.30pm matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays, excluding October 18.
Tickets, priced £22.40-65.40, are available from www.atgtickets.com/venues/bristol-hippodrome or 08448 713012.
