One of the country’s most distinctive comedians will be returning to North Somerset this month to present a unique radio show.

Mark Steel will be in Portishead to record a programme for BBC Radio 4 and a handful of free tickets are still up for grabs.

The recording is part of the Mark Steel’s In Town series, in which the 57-year-old travels to a few UK areas and produces a comedy show about what he discovers.

A BBC spokesman said: “Every year on BBC Radio 4, comedian, columnist and author Mark Steel visits six different towns across the UK.

“He delves into their history, people and idiosyncrasies to try to work out what ingredients combine to make the places distinctive.

“He then creates a bespoke stand-up show about the town for that community which he performs in front of a local audience.

“It’s a celebration of the sort of places in Britain that have their own fascinating stories to tell with inhabitants who are passionate about what their town has to offer.

“The show is now in its eighth series. Previously, Mark has recorded shows in more than 40 interesting and unusual places from the Isle of Portland in Dorset to Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney, as well as ones in Alderney in the Channel Islands and Gibraltar.

“In this episode Mark visits Portishead.”

It represents the second visit to North Somerset in as many years for Steel after he performed a one-off gig at the Curzon cinema in Clevedon last year.

The BBC spokesman added: “Admission to this recording is on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Please note that as not everyone who asks for tickets uses them, to make sure we have a full house we send out more tickets than there are places. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people so please arrive early.”

The recording will take place on November 21 at Somerset Hall, in The Precinct.

Audience members must be at least 14 years old and children must be accompanied by an adult.
