Will Bergfelt raced home in a remarkable time in this year’s Clevedon Cycling Club’s eight-mile time trial.

While the runners were warming-up, Boxing Day cyclists were racing in Clevedon’s annual eight-mile time trial.

The out and back route between Clevedon School and Gordano School is now only used once a year for the post Christmas blast, but was once the main time-trial course.

Many local cyclists will have cut their racing teeth riding an ‘evening 8’ but few would have got close to this year’s winning time which was a quite remarkable 16.44 by Will Bergfelt from the Neon Velo team.

Will had clearly laid off the mince pies during the festive period to clock an average of 28.7 mph for his ride on a cold and wet morning.

Jon Gall put his cyclocross fitness to good effect to claim second in 19.04 with Gareth Jones third in 19.44, followed by Pete Wheddon (20.37), Tommy Barlow (21.18), James Hester (21.29), Kev Watts (22.51) and Mark Hannaford (22.53).

Specialist aerodynamic bikes were used by a number of the riders and so a special mention to Mark for riding his traditional winter bike including steel frame and mudguards.

Club cycling is not all about racing and for a lot of riders their enjoyment comes from joining others for a social ride. Sunday morning club-runs are well represented with different paced groups to suit ability.
