A new triathlon event is being organised at Portishead, aimed specifically at beginners.
NORTH Somerset residents looking for a new fitness challenge will have the chance to ‘try a tri’ this year at a new triathlon event aimed specifically at beginners.
The Self-Transcendence Somerset Try-a-Tri is being organised by the Sri Chinmoy Athletic Club, a Bristol-based organisation that has been staging community sport events in the region since the 1980s.
“A try-a-tri is a genuine triathlon, but the distances are relatively short and the event is designed specifically for first-timers,” said race director Garga Chamberlain.
“The swim will be eight lengths of the 33 metre pool, the cycle ride is 11 miles on minor roads, and the run is just under two miles on a flat course. Each leg of the event is achievable on its own, but putting the three sports together creates a race that is both challenging and fun.”
The try-a-tri will be taking place on July 1 at Portishead Open Air Pool. Although many taking part will see it as a one-off challenge, the organisers hope that some will use it as a first step into the world of multisport training and racing.
The event is open to anyone aged 15 or over, and the event team will provide advice on training and kit requirements for everyone who enters, so no prior experience or knowledge of triathlon is needed.
