TENNIS in the Nailsea and Portishead area looks set for a boost with additions being made to Matt Rogers’ current coaching programme.

Rogers, Nailsea LTC’s coach, has recruited additional coaches to help establish new sessions at both Nailsea and Gordano Secondary School sites.

The new sessions will include afterschool clubs for secondary pupils, midweek coaching for younger primary pupils plus activities on Saturdays and Sundays for a variety of ages including cardio tennis, a high tempo tennis workout session for adults, whether you are a beginner or experienced player.

The new sessions will be launched at a tennis open day which will be held at Nailsea School on February 26, 10.30am-1.30pm, all standards, ages and abilities are invited to come along to try out an activity.

Rogers hopes that the new sessions will increase the profile and participation levels for tennis in the area. He said: “I plan for the sessions at the school sites to initially focus at grassroots level, hopefully attracting new players to the game of tennis.

The sessions will be designed to compliment the programme already in place at Nailsea LTC, it would be great to see players who start in the new sessions become keen to play more tennis and eventually join as club members.”

Of the newly recruited coaches, Rogers added: “It’s been fantastic to find coaches to help drive forward tennis in this area. Haydn Benney has a great amount of experience having worked extensively overseas, including at a luxury hotel in Dubai and Mike Greedy, who is also involved at Clevedon and Portishead Tennis Clubs, has tremendous enthusiasm which he will be able to pass on to the new players.”

If the new sessions prove successful it could provide the school sites with the opportunity to further develop their tennis facilities.

Since Nailsea School was redeveloped they have had ambitions to offer a covered tennis facility, making use of the current facilities is the first step towards achieving this goal.

Rogers hopes to see a number of people at the open day. He said: “Everyone is welcome. I’d like to see an array of people come along and enjoy playing tennis.”
