Clevedon produced one of its best displays of the season away at Sidmouth.
THIS was an outstanding performance from a strongest possible side Clevedon could field.
They played some magical rugby and should have been more than 13-0 up at half-time.
Clevedon took the lead with an early penalty by Mike Taylor. The visitors created waves of attacks, but a stubborn home defence kept them at bay. Eventually after a superb handling move, Simon Johns crossed the whitewash.
This was quickly followed by a brilliant Oscar James try after fielding a weak clearance kick. Having dominated the first half, the Seasiders turned round to play up the slope.
Clevedon struck straight after the restart with a try by Owen Biggins after good forward foraging, Taylor converting. Within minutes, Clevedon scored the best team try of the game with Mike Lowis scoring in the corner after the ball had passed through several pairs of hands, Taylor again converting.
Clevedon’s line-out was good and the scrums were solid, allow the outstanding back row trio to benefit and drive well off the base of the scrum.
Clevedon’s last try came from a good backs handling movement resulting in Dean Ashfield scoring wide out. The visitors seemed to relax and Sidmouth were rewarded with a try in the corner. The hosts hit back straight away with a deserved second try.
Head coach Nick Hill said: “This was an impressive performance, Sidmouth are not often beaten at home but we looked a different class. As I’ve said all along it’s about building performances.
“The biggest compliment came from the Sidmouth players and supporters who said that we were the best drilled side they had played all season.”
On Saturday, Clevedon are home to Cullompton (2.30pm).Vice-president’s lunch at 1.30pm.
