After last week’s 10-try fest against Crewkerne, Nailsea & Backwell went one better in an 11-try extravaganza against neighbours Gordano.

It was Gordano, however, who went into the lead early on in the game with an interception try, followed closely by another try mauled over from a late tackle penalty.

Nailsea responded with a display of good passing through the middle for winger Matt Hunt to score in the corner. Then came a fine individual try from Gordano’s outside half, who chipped over the defence and re-gathered to score a fine converted try.

Two minutes later Nailsea answered when with fine handling, once again in centre field, the ball was moved to Hunt, who raced into the corner from 40 metres.

Just before half-time, a break by Nailsea outside-half Luke Stevens saw the ball moved to Joe Reed, who beat the defence for a well-taken try to make it 19-15 at the break.

Early in the second half, Gordano went further ahead when poor defending saw their second row burst through for their bonus point try. Again Nailsea responded with an attack down the wing, which saw man of the match Hunt go for his hat-trick and Nailsea’s bonus point try, converted by Reed.

Once again poor defending saw Gordano come back with another try to take an eleven point lead at 33-22.

With the bigger Gordano pack beginning to tire, Nailsea scored from a line-out when captain Jamie Sullivan fed Dickie Palmer for a try. Nailsea were leaving it late and on the stroke of full-time, with Nailsea on the attack, a great pass from outside-half Luke Stevens put a three-man overlap clear of the defence and James Cleave ran in, with the all important conversion deftly added by Reed, for Nailsea to take the lead for the first and only time in the match.

However, the drama was not over as, long into injury time, the referee found a penalty for Gordano on the halfway line. With no time for the line-out, Gordano attempted to wrest the match back, but the shot went wide for Nailsea to run out winners at 33-34.

Coach Tony Hill said after the match: “With all the confusion about whether the fixture was going to be played beforehand, the lads took a while to get going, but at times we produced the pacy offloading game we want to play.

“Winning close ones like this is exactly what will help our lads grow in confidence for the future.”

On Saturday, Nailsea welcome Wiveliscombe to the West End Park.
