A try by debutant Ben Bushell gave Yatton victory on the opening day of the league season.
Yatton 30 pts
Avon 27 pts
For neutral rugby watchers this was an exciting display of open rugby, but for each sides supporter’s it was nail-biting throughout with a total of 10 tries and the lead changing four times in the second half.
With the slope advantage home-side Yatton were off to a 10-point lead within the first seven minutes, but were set back on their heels as Avon ran in two tries within minutes of each other.
Yatton managed to break the level scores when Liam Chambers, playing at full-back, finished off Pete Quinn’s timely pass, to touch down, the game turning around at 15-10.
After the break, Yatton were slow to get going and Avon scored two tries and a conversion within four minutes of the kick-off.
Stunned Yatton hit back with a series of pick and drives and grounded by new captain Ollie Hardwidge. Ten minutes later Hardwidge charged through to give Yatton 25-22 lead.
Avon regained the advantage by two points with another try with five minutes left on the clock.
As each side assessed their position, Yatton had the put-in on a midfield scrum near halfway, the ball was won and Ben Bowyer slipped a sweet pass to substitute Ben Bushell who turned on the afterburners on his debut for Yatton to score the winning try.
