FOR the third time this season, Gordano’s first team match was called off when Imperial’s south Bristol pitch was declared waterlogged.

Rather than have another enforced Saturday off, Gordano took an experimental side without six first team regulars to Avonmouth to take on their reserves in a hastily-arranged fixture.

The game was played in great spirits and entertained the spectators despite the extremely muddy conditions. Both sides crossed for three tries apiece. Gordano’s scores came courtesy of two from wing Harry Lancely and one from second row, Matt Rollings.

The sides were separated by a successful penalty from the home side, who eventually took the honours 20-17.

Gordano 2nds had a great home 66-10 win against Keynsham.

For the first time this season, Gordano fielded four senior sides with more than 80 players being available to play. Unfortunately the 3rds and newly created development squad were unable to find suitable opposition, so they played against each other.

Both sides demonstrated a good deal of flair despite the conditions and eventually it was the heavier and more experienced 3rd team that came out on top by one score.

The game was refereed by Gordano director of rugby, Keith Leaker who said afterwards: “As one of a small number of clubs to have obtained the RFU Whole Club Seal of Approval Charter Mark, we are committed to developing players within the core values of the game.

“By creating a welcoming, friendly and safe environment we are now reaping the rewards. With over 90 senior players and 300 junior members, we feel we are on the right track to continue to build something special within our community.”

On Saturday, Gordano entertain Winscombe who are currently languishing at the foot of
Somerset Premier League. Also on Saturday, Gordano ladies travel to Ivel Barbarians in Yeovil for their second match of the season.
