Gordano Rugby Club celebrated 30 years at Caswell Lane with an excellent victory over Avonmouth in the Bristol Combination Vase.

On a night where Gordano Rugby Club were celebrating 30 years at Caswell Lane, their first team knocked out cup favourites Avonmouth in Bristol Combination Vase in fantastic fashion.

The match started with a traditional derby day physicality, with both teams trying to get the upper hand early on. Avonmouth were the first to score with a penalty goal from 30 metres out.

With a stiff breeze behind them, Avonmouth where able to get good field position and from a five-metre line-out they scored the first try of the game.

This did not dampen the spirits of the home team as they were just starting to break the tackles and get some offloads in.

After some great spoiling at an Avonmouth line-out, Gordano were in Avonmouth’s 22 and building the phases and it was not long before Jack Thomas scored under the posts, convertedby Sam Hodge.

Gordano finished the half the stronger team and Harry Ashwin scored a great team try that started from their own 22, Hodge converted to give Gordano a 14-8 lead at half time.

After the break, Avonmouth came out strongly and were soon back in the lead with their own try under the posts. Gordano did not panic and with the 150+ supporters on the side cheering them on, they raised their game to dominated the rest of the half.

First was a try out wide for Ben Wilson again converted by Hodge before Hodge added a penalty.

With time coming to and end, the game was wrapped up when Joe Rowsell’s crossfield kick was not collected by the Avonmouth winger and Jack Hendy jumped on the bouncing ball just before going dead to give Gordano a 29-15 lead with two minutes to play

Avonmouth were not finished and scored on the last play of the game to make the final score 29-22.
