CLEVEDON Under-15s defeated close neighbours Yatton in the Somerset Cup quarter-finals, running out 22-15 winners.
Clevedon scored after being held on their try line for the first 10 minutes with Guy Prideaux scoring. The second try came after Dan Haskell’s fine run on the wing, with Kieran Hill’s boot collecting the extras. Yatton added three points making the half-time score 12-3 in Clevedon’s favour.
Clevedon played up the slope for the second half with Ben Williams touching down in the corner. Yatton retaliated with a try before Clevedon’s Jason Fisher crossed to end Clevedon’s tally. Yatton scored a converted try on the final whistle to end the match.
Clevedon’s coach Andy Lyon said: “The lads had to really step up to the plate today as a unit, our defence was massive and it needed to be against a capable Yatton/Cheddar attack.”
NAILSEA & Backwell Under-13s managed to arrange a late fixture against Burnham after a month without a game.
From the start, Nailsea started strongly and scored six first-half tries through the strong running of Harvey Flower (3), Josh Allen and Dom Gordon, with Alex Jones (3) and Adam Grafton adding the extras for a 38-0 half-time lead.
At half-time, the coaches asked for the whole team to step up and play team rugby resting several of the stronger lads to allow others the chance to shine.
Unfortunately the Burnham coach also asked his players to play with some pride and this seemed to spark a revival. Burnham ran the ball at will and exposed weak Nailsea tackling for three easy tries to bring them back into the game.
However, once Flower was brought back into proceedings, Nailsea again sparked into life and finished the game the stronger team with Flower leading the charge with three further tries, with Jones and Grafton converting one apiece.
The final score of 55-15 was a comprehensive win, but the result was disappointing in the fact that the lads had not played as a team.
