North Somerset Athletic Club’s men’s 17 squad covered themselves in glory at the Midland Counties Road Relay Championships in Sutton Park in Birmingham.

The A team consisting of Oliver Lock, Matthew Howard and Alfie Hocking won a superb team silver medal finishing close behind Charnwood as they sought to emulate their Under-15 title success in the same event two years ago.

Ollie got the team off to a solid start finishing seventh on stage one (12.42) putting Matt in the perfect position to carve through his rivals running a superb leg to move the team up to third in a sizzling 12.19, the fifth fastest time of the day in this age group.

Alfie then kept his cool to move up another place on the final stage with a time of 12.51 for a fantastic team achievement.

For the club’s Under-13 girls it was a frustrating case of what might have been.

Keira Devereux gave the team a blistering start clocking a time of 14.45 – the second fastest of the day in her age group – to bring the team home in first place.

Lower-age Millie Redman in her first road relay, took the baton to ran a superb second leg in 15.30 (10th fastest of the day from the 84 competitors), losing only one place, but sadly the girls didn’t make the podium as there was no third runner to bring them home.

The club took 10 teams on the day with all the athletes giving a good account of themselves.
