THE five sides at the top of the Wrington Vale Billiards League are now separated by just three points as the tightest championship for many years approaches the three-quarters mark.
There are new leaders as well with No Hopers at the top after inflicting a 4-0 win on previous leaders Zimmers with wins for Mark Wright, Matt Northern and Mark White over Bruce Bernard, Geoff Passmore and Wayne Ticer respectively.
Backwell A are continuing their better form of late snatching a 3-1 win at the death against Congresbury.
In the first game Irving Prowse found conceding 55 points to Backwell skipper Alan Spear too much to handle as he slipped to defeat by 11 with Alan having generally the better running as his opponent missed a couple of reasonable chances.
In the next, Reuben Hurse, receiving 20 points from Martyn Howell, steadily built up a seemingly unassailable lead, but Martyn had other ideas and battled his way back as Reuben struggled to find the last half dozen points although he did scrape home by 13 in the end.
With Martyn playing again the best match ended the evening. Roy Jenkins gradually reduced his 65 point arrears and hit a purple patch with consecutive breaks of 52 and 26 enabling him to go in front and apparently cruising to victory.
However, trailing 101-124, Martyn hit an excellent break of 33 and with some good running, prevented Roy from scoring another point to storm through and win 150-124.
Backwell B beat Short Frames after a run of indifferent results. George Rowe, who has been showing increasing form of late, scored at most visits to the table against newcomer Dave Darling who also made a few good shots as George closed out a comfortable victory.
The second game looked as if it would go the other way as Short Frames’ Jeff Jones always had too much in his locker for Dennis Mansfield. Trailing 148-95, Dennis came to the table and out of nothing knocked in a lovely break of 30 to close the gap, although Jeff got the two points he needed a couple of visits later.
The final game saw the skippers playing each other off level starts. Mike Tozer, for Short Frames, hit the table running and soon built up a 40 point lead over Bob Selby who struggled to score at the beginning.
However, Bob’s safety play dried up the points for Mike and the gap narrowed. The lead changed hands numerous times as both players found runs of form, but it was Bob who eventually sealed a seven point win and the victory for Backwell.
