CLEVEDON Athletic Club had a strong showing at the recent Gloucester League cross-country event held at Tewkesbury.

The club had several debutants for the cross-country, namely Laura Croker, Steve James, Andy Ewing and first time runner for the club Peter Fews.

First up were the ladies and snow started to fall on the already frozen surface. Croker ran exceptionally well to come in 11th in 31.29, despite a tumble mid-race and a PB 5k at Burnham less than 48 hours prior.

Kate Britten in 13th (31.48) and Helen Ball in 19th (32.52) both had their best placings of the season, resulting in a second place in the vets team and third place in the senior teams, by far the ladies’ best team performance of the season.

The men were next and conditions were worsening with the snow getting heavy. The Clevedon runners were all together at the end of the first lap and less than a minute covered them at the finish.

First in was Stuart Hancock in 22nd (39.39), followed by Andy Shaw in 24th (39.50), Nick Hides in 25th (40.09) and Peter Fews in 29th (40.31). Next up was Steve James, after an excitable start, in 64th (44.04), then Ben Hides in 78th (45.50) and Andy Ewing in 106th (53.08). Their reward was being placed second vets team and fourth senior team.

Being the final fixture of the season, series prizes were awarded and Kate Britten was third in the V35 category, likewise Andy Shaw in the V40s. Trumping them was Malcolm Roberts with an excellent silver in the V65s.

The male vets team have secured the bronze following the efforts at this final event, but the team results are awaiting confirmation.

Burnham 5K results: Luke Murray first overall in 17.38; Simon Hancock (10th) 19.36; Laura Croker (first lady and 11th overall) 19.44; Bob Croker (20th) 20.41; Neil Wallace (third M50 and 24th overall) 21.17; Andy Ewing (32nd) 23.20.

In the Blackmore Vale half-marathon, Maria Powell came home in 1.28.32 to finish fifth lady (1st V45). It was her first time under 1.30 and reduced her PB by 4.5 minutes.

Clevedon Athletic Club meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Strode Sports Centre in Clevedon (both days 7pm sharp). Also see the club website www.clevedonac.co.uk for further contact information.
