Somerset Gryphons Ladies defeat league champions Bournemouth to avoid relegation.

Somerset Gryphons pulled out all the stops on their final game of the season against top of the league Bournemouth.
Needing a win to avoid likely relegation, each player gave it their all and helped produce a strong 3-0 win to secure the needed three points.
Recognising their weaknesses from the previous meeting, Gryphons’ coach Pete Atwell opted for a 3-5-2 formation to pack the middle, which paid off.
Bournemouth, already guaranteed promotion, came to Clevedon School with 10 players, which also certainly helped Gryphons’ cause, but it was the hard work of each individual player that enabled Gryphons to take charge immediately by earning a short corner within five minutes and showing Bournemouth they were not in for an easy ride.
Another short corner 15 minutes in, saw Elaine Basterfield pick up the ball near the penalty spot and take it on the reverse, slotting it past the goalie onto the backboard.
Gryphons retained their 1-0 lead throughout the first-half, with the defenders blocking the handful of Bournemouth breaks and on form goalie Jenny Newton saving all shots from the Bournemouth forwards.
The second half saw much the same effort from Gryphons and with the 10 away players tiring, Gryphons were able to capitalise with further goals from joint players of the match, India Lilley and Anna Craig.
The delighted Gryphons were joined by the opposition for celebratory teas at The Crab Apple and would like to thank the Crab for their ongoing post-match support this season.
