Mike Butler played what he described as “one of the rounds of my life” at Clevedon Golf Club, shooting a nett 64 to win the Eric Mayoh Salver in the seniors’ medal competition.

The round was a model of consistency with identical scores of 40 on both the front and back nine holes. Both halves included one birdie and three level pars, with nothing worse than a bogie on either.

In addition to a warm glow of satisfaction and the trophy, Mike was also rewarded with a two-shot reduction in his handicap.

There was a depleted field in the club midweek competition and both divisions were won by scores of 41 points. Josh Loveridge was the overall winner on countback and topped Division 2, pipping Mark Hodges, the top player in Division 1, on the back nine.

Winners of the ladies’ EG medal was Sue Tasker with an impressive score of nett 73, two under par. She will now go forward to represent the club in the national Grass Roots competition.

Dave McGovern hosted the annual captain’s day competition in support of his chosen charity. The total funds raised are still being calculated, but will include more than £500 from a raffle that was supported by almost all the competitors.

Out on the course, the players had to brave a sustained drizzle that played havoc with some of the fancy dress hats and costumes that were the designated dress code for the day.

The rain did not dampen spirits or enthusiasm, and the winning scores all contained some father-son combinations. Top price went to the team containing Andrew and Harry Selwyn, partnered by Jason Wallace and Michael Kemp.

The runners-up side included Matt and Alfie Hocking, alongside James Hicks and Josh Owen. Nick Hicks, James’ dad, was in the third-place team with Richard Purnell, Les Holmes and Coin McFadden.
