Horlers win by four shots at Clevedon mixed open event

Clevedon Golf Club members John and Merriel Horler won the club’s senior mixed open by an impressive margin.

John and Merriel Horler won the senior mixed open at their home club, Clevedon, by an impressive margin, outscoring the opposition by four points.

John has missed a large part of the season after suffering a broken leg, so this was a welcome return to form. In second place were regular visitors Rob Thain and Lin Papdopoullos from Farrington, who took the prize for best away score, beating the Chippenham pairing of Michael Smith and Christine Davis.

Club members competed for the Bawden Trophy, a rare competition where players pit their nett score against the card of the course to win or lose holes. The result was closely contested, with no less than five players returning scores of three up.

Countback was needed to separate the players and top spot went to Gary Villis who won the trophy and Division 1. Just missing out were Adam Williams, Steve Jones and Richard Cranfield. Jim Cunning led Division 2, also scoring three up with Dan Mullholland took Division 3 with a score of one down.

The ladies’ Stableford saw Heather Priestley finish three points ahead of the field as she won Division 1 with a score of 37. Caroline Fairhurst ended top of Division 2 on 34 with Juliet Hagley winning Division 3 on a score of 27.

Jack Harris pipped Ian Saynor in the seniors’ Stableford on countback, both ending with scores of 39 points to head their respective divisions, with identical results in the midweek competition as Tim Aldom finished ahead of Chris Martin.

Away from Clevedon, Bob Anderson recorded the fourth hole-in-one of his career on the 175 yard 16th hole at Worlebury Golf Club.
