Close finish at Clevedon

Two teams battled it out for top spot in Clevedon Golf Club’s latest Texas scramble.

As is often the case in Texas scrambles, the margins of victory can be very narrow, with positions decided by who finishes the stronger on the day.

This was certainly the case at Clevedon, when two teams battled it out for the top spot with a barrage of birdies, both ending their rounds with gross scores of 61.

The team of Tim Aldon, Gary Villis, Steve Jones and Jamie Osment started off in great form, finishing the front nine in seven under par. They picked up another four shots against the card by the 13th before finishing their game with five consecutive pars.

Starting off slightly slower were Gareth Watkins, Andrew Spring, Andrew McCall and Alan Blackwell. Their opening nine was three under par before a birdie blitz saw them pick up another eight shots as they turned for home. The handicapping system gave them the win to by just 1.8 shots.

In the Vernon Browne seniors foursomes, the result was much more clear cut as past captains Ian Saynor and Les Holmes finished with 41 points, three clear of Derek Tate and Dennis Milsom in second place. Robert Doy and Ray Border came out on top of the countback decider with 37 points to clinch third spot.
