Andy secures club championship title at Clevedon

Andy Ferris produced two steady rounds to clinch the club championship title at Clevedon Golf Club.

Another full week of competitions took place at Clevedon Golf Club, culminating in the men’s club championship over the weekend.

Andy Ferris led the field at the halfway stage with an opening 76, enjoying a two-shot advantage over Graham Trenaman, Steve Lawrence and the veteran David Shields. Graham also took the lead in the nett competition with a score of 66, one ahead of Mark Crew.

The leading players came back the following day for the second round, but despite valiant efforts, no-one managed to displace the overnight leaders.

Gary Villis finished runner-up with a total of 156, but Andy maintained his grip on the title with a composed second round of 73 and a total of 149 giving a seven-shot margin of victory.

In the nett competition, Mark Crew dropped back into third spot on 142, and another consistent round of 71 put David Shields into second place. Graham took the nett title, a score of 71 resulted in a win by four shots. The Optimists Cup, donated in memory of Doug and Dot Clarke, was awarded to Jamie Osment.

The ladies’ Stableford was won by Laureen Angell with a total of 37 points which took her to the top of Division 2. Sandra Jones edged Linda Reynolds into second place in Division 1, both returned scores of 36 with Sandra winning on countback. Tracey Buckland was the Division 3 winner with a total of 29 points.

The winner of the seniors’ Ron Hall Salver was Steve Wellman, who returned a score of 38 points. Two points further back were Mike Venables, who topped Division 1, and Richard Purnell.

There was a close result in the men’s midweek medal, Steve Lawrence taking the honours on countback from Chris Tucker, both players scoring nett 72.

Seniors’ Stableford - Division 1: Mike Venables 36 pts; Paul Smith 35 (countback); Chris Bellamy 35. Division 2: Steve Wellman 38; Richard Purnell 36; Stuart Meyrick 34.

Midweek medal: Steve Lawrence 72 nett (countback); Chris Tucker 72; Oliver Hayden 73 (countback).

Mens invitation day: Dennis Godley (Clevedon), Alex Godley (Kingsdown) 45 pts; Chris Martin (Clevedon), James Poole (Thornbury) 44 (countback); David Young (Clevedon), Martino D’Aliesio (Castle Combe) 44.
