Clevedon Town welcomed Hengrove Athletic to The Everyone Active Stadium for this Somerset Premier Cup second round tie and comfortably progressed to the next round with a superb team performance that saw them score six goals with captain Clayton Fortune registering a hat-trick.

The hosts took the lead in the 11th minute with an excellent goal. The ball was played to Fortune 20 yards from goal and he placed a superb shot into the top corner. Clevedon increased their lead on 23 minutes when Daine O’Connor played a superbly judged one-two with Fortune and smashed the ball home.

Clevedon further increased their lead in the 37th minute when Alex Russell played the ball through for O’Connor and although his shot was saved, he forced the ball over the line.

Hengrove made the worst possible start to the second half when Clevedon scored again on 49 minutes. Russell picked the ball up and advanced to the edge of the box before finding the corner of the net.

Clevedon were at it again in the 57th minute when a through ball found Fortune unmarked and he had the time to pick his spot to make the score 5-0.

Two minutes later and it could have been six when James Fisher was nudged over in the box, but Fisher’s spot kick was well saved.

In the 70th minute Clevedon scored again when a good run by substitute Morgan Davies saw him cross the ball into the box where Kane Ingram was tripped and this time netted to complete his hat-trick and make the score 6-0.

Hengrove got a consolation on 77 minutes when substitute Scott Lewis launched the ball from nearly 30 yards and despite the efforts of Damien Freeman, the ball dropped over his head and into the net.

This was an excellent team performance with Fortune deservedly taking the man of the match award for a true captain’s performance.

Clevedon are next in action on Saturday when they visit Cadbury Heath with a 3pm kick-off.
