Gordano School girls played at Wembley in the final of the EFL Sport+Kinder Girls Cup and were crowned champions.

Gordano School were crowned champions of the EFL Sport+Kinder Girls Cup at Wembley Stadium.

Representing Bristol City, Gordano School, who were competing for the first time, overcame reigning champions Thomas Telford School of Shrewsbury 2-0 prior to the Checkatrade Trophy final, courtesy of goals from Emily Edwards and Keira Howse.

More than 6,000 girls took part in the six-a-side competition that was organised on behalf of the EFL and the EFL Trust, with the overriding aim to get more youngsters involved in physical activity and promote the importance of an active lifestyle.

Each of the 72 EFL clubs hosted a tournament for their local schools, with the winners earning the right to present their club and wear their colours on the road to Wembley.

The local school reached the national stadium by triumphing in the preliminary round-robin tournament at South Bristol Sports Centre, before continuing their success in the regional and Southern Area finals.

Gordano’s teacher of PE and coach of year eight girls’ football, Mr Yau, spoke of his appreciation for the tournament.

He said: “It is a fantastic initiative to increase participation levels in girls’ football. Kinder+Sport and the EFL do a great job of running this tournament.

“It wouldn’t be possible, though, without the help of the local football community and Bristol City themselves.”

The club would like to offer huge congratulations to Phoebe Delafaille, Keira Howse, Romia Nash, Emily Edwards, Katie Quick, Tilly Smale, Katherine Southern and Keiana Jones for their outstanding achievements.
