Early mistakes cost Ashton & Backwell dearly as they crashed out of the county cup.

Ashton & Backwell 0

Shepton Mallet 2

Ashton & Backwell will rue a sluggish start that resulted in a cup exit at the hands of premier division Shepton Mallet.

A goal after three minutes from Liam Watson came after a bout of head tennis in the six-yard box that Backwell had plenty of opportunities to clear and should have defended a lot better.

It was 15 minutes before the home side threatened with Aaron Allen warming the keeper’s hands, but Tom Easterbrook turned defence into attack with a long clearance and although Lewis Coombes made a good save, Joe Morgan reacted quickest to double the lead.

An avalanche was the fear, but from the half-hour mark the home team worked their way into the game and were far the better side after the break.

A comeback looked on the cards, but the Stags were unable to find a breakthrough. Jake Flower, Miles Allen and Sol Shearer all fired high or wide when well placed, before Jason Radnedge beat the visiting keeper, but saw his scuffed shot hacked off the line.

Allen’s low shot looked destined for the bottom corner before Easterbrook dived at full stretch for the save of the game. From the resulting corner, Easterbrook had to tip George Saunders’ kick over.

From another dangerous Saunders corner, Hardidge sent the ball back across the goal area and Shearer headed against the bar. The goal would not come and even in the closing minutes, man of the match Shearer was again denied when Easterbrook saved from close range after good work from impressive substitute Cameron Maine.

The next home game at the Lancer Scott Stadium is tonight (Wedneday) against Radstock Town (7.30pm).

Team: Coombes, Biggins (Maine), Read, Miles Allen, Saunders, Thomas, Shearer, Aaron Allen (George Saunders), Hardidge, Flower (Young), Radnidge.
