At the halfway stage of the season after 21 games, Ashton & Backwell United sit 19th in the table having recorded five wins and five draws.

A second clean sheet in two games and avoiding defeat were two positives from an attritional encounter with Chippenham Park.

For the home side, Coombes, Bishop, Devoy and Crouch were solid, all putting in strong interceptions when necessary and playing an effective offside trap.

For the visitors Lewis McCarron on the wing was their outstanding player, but he was neutralised by Stags’ man of the Match Billy Devoy.

Both midfields were combative and in so doing rather cancelled each other out, such that as the game progressed, good ball distribution was at a premium.

Four minutes after the interval, the pace of substitute Flower gave him shooting space and minutes later he fed Skidmore, but his shot had little power.

Stags’ best move of the half was initiated by Thomas on 83 minutes on halfway, his first pass was deflected off the referee and second time around he found Flower who cut inside the box and with only the goalkeeper to beat, he shot wide.

The hosts nearly snatched it in added time when a free kick on the edge of the box taken by Crouch was well saved by the visiting keeper.

On Saturday, Ashton & Backwell travel to Welton for their next Toolstation Western League Division 1 match.
