Clevedon Rugby Club defeated the Royal Oak to win finals day at the Clevedon 20:20 Community League.

The largest crowd recorded this year gathered at Clevedon Cricket Club to witness finals day of the Clevedon 20:20 Community League, with the Royal Oak taking on Clevedon RFC, preceded with a plate play-off between the teams finishing third and fourth in the group stages.

The play-off match was a spirited affair, with captains James Barzotelli, Gary Simons, Steve Smith and Tony Donkin making sure that everyone had a bowl.

At its conclusion, the infamous ‘jug’ was awarded to Swiss Valley and the Champagne moment was deemed to have been claimed by Tony Donkin.

The final was always going to be a competitive engagement, with the Royal Oak opting to bat first. Their openers of John Vickerstaff and and Sam Blackall scored well in the initial overs. A superb catch by Mike Lowis saw the first wicket fall, but the Oak continued to score well and reached 90 at the halfway stage and, with a superb innings from Sam Blackall (58 not out), the Oak reached 148.

In response, the Rugby Club’s openers of Tony Dauncey and Tim Brooks started well, but a dazzling catch at deep square leg, along with a run out rendered them with 72 runs on the board at the halfway stage, with captain, Jonathan Shepherd still at the crease.

The next batsman, Mike Taylor (55 not out), ably assisted by Ben Hazeldene, put the result of this final beyond doubt by hitting a 57-run partnership in the next five overs and the Rugby Club took the spoils with three overs to spare.

At the presentation ceremony, players from all eight teams, the umpires, scorers and members of Clevedon Cricket Club were all thanked for their contribution to the Community League.

The trophy for the best bowling average was presented to Tony Dauncey from CRFC with an average of 6.53 and the trophy for the best batting average was awarded to Pete Gay from Swiss Valley.

The Champagne moment of the final was awarded to Andy Williams from the Royal Oak for his stunning catch at deep square leg and the player of the final was presented to Mike Taylor from CRFC.

The runners-up trophy was presented to Chris Hickling, captain of the Royal Oak and the Colin Alexander winners trophy was presented to Jonathan Shepherd, captain of CRFC.
