Portishead were plunged into the relegation zone with a heavy defeat against Shirehampton.

Shirehampton 55-1

For the second consecutive week, Portishead were blown away in a batting performance to forget, as only two batsmen reached double figures as the visitors plunged into the relegation zone.

Shirehampton raced to their victory target in only 10 overs. The one highlight for Portishead was David Peel picking up a maiden first team wicket.

But skipper Mike Hooper will need a much better effort at home to Pak Bristolians on Saturday to lift hopes of avoiding the drop.

The seconds edged a thriller against local rivals Cleeve with three balls to spare.

A huge opening partnership of 156 between Charlie Grubb (93) and Carey Elswood (44) threatened to take the game away from Portishead.

But once that partnership was split, Portishead dragged things back thanks to tight spells from skipper Bob McGhee, Bala Krishnasamy and Richard Bache, who picked up three wickets.

After tea, Portishead made a positive start with openers Simon Garrett and Pete Todd in good form, until Todd fell sweeping to Andrew Martin, the pick of the visiting bowlers.

Garrett (39), was joined by McGhee and the pair got Portishead ahead of the required run rate. A calamitous run-out saw Garrett fall, but McGhee, who struck 14 boundaries, kept the chase going until he departed for an excellent 71.

It was left to Tony Mott (25 not out), and Krishnasamy (15 not out), to see Portishead to the narrowest of victories.
