Relegation-threatened Portishead lost again despite an excellent all-round display from stand-in skipper Rob Chick.

An outstanding spell of bowling by stand-in skipper Rob Chick was not enough to stop Portishead sliding to defeat at Old Bristolians.

Chick’s spell of 5-13 from his nine overs saw him rip through the host’s top order as they chased Portishead’s inadequate total.

At one point he had 5-5 and gave Portishead hope of an unlikely victory after they were hustled out for only 95, with Chick, batting at seven, top scoring with 33.

But the experienced Rupert Swetman held Old Bristolians’ innings together and saw them over the line with 45 not out.

The result leaves Portishead requiring a miracle to avoid the drop.

Portishead 2nd XI 168-9

Depleted by injuries and holidays, Portishead put up a valiant effort in defeat against Bishop Sutton.

The visiting top order rode their luck against the new ball, with James Cooper being particularly unlucky to not pick up early wickets.

Wicketkeeper batsman David Casey top scored, with his 70 providing the bulk of Sutton’s innings. Skipper Bob McGhee and Cooper, returning at the death, picked up two wickets apiece.

McGhee gave Portishead brief hope of chasing down the target, with an accomplished 75.

But no other batsman could really help him form a match-winning partnership and the hosts ultimately ended up 70 runs short.
