Clevedon’s Chris Coles made an early exit to this year’s Yonex All England Open Championships.
Clevedon badminton star Chris Coles has already set his sights on next season’s Yonex All England Open Championships having suffered an early exit from this year’s edition.
Coles, aged 24, and men’s doubles partner Greg Mairs, faced world number 30 pair Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Hendra Wijaya in qualification as they looked to seal their spot in the main draw.
They came nail-bitingly close to toppling their Singapore opponents, but eventually lost 21-19, 21-17 to see their run at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena end at the first hurdle.
But Coles remains in high spirits despite defeat, insisting the championships is mainly about the experience for him.
Coles said: “We never go on the court to lose, but they are an established pair. They’ve been around the block and they know how to win games. It is a shame I’ve got to wait until next year now to enjoy it all again.”
Now in its 107th year, the All England Open Badminton Championships is one of just five worldwide tournaments listed as a MetLife Badminton World Federation Superseries Premier event.
He continued: “The All England is by far my favourite tournament. I’ve played here five or six times now – it’s the first one that goes on my calendar at the start of every year.
