Backwell Tennis Club held its club championship finals with 30 finals being played and more than 300 supporters attending.

Backwell Tennis Club enjoyed another successful club tournaments finals weekend with 30 finals matches completed.

This is possibly the largest club tournament in the South West and attracted more than 300 supporters who were provided with free barbecue, cakes and drinks as well as the opportunity to watch some high quality and competitive finals.

Matches were played from boy’s and girls’ eight and under to the seniors’ over -60s.

The ladies’ singles title was successfully defended by Ali Simpson holding off a tough fight from Jude Barker 7-6, 6-2. The men’s title was won by Stuart Beaver who played high quality tennis and was just a bit too steady beating Huw Solari 6-1, 6-3.

The ladies’ doubles was won by Ali Simpson and Julie Wild beating Jude Barker and Zoe Fearnley in a very tight contest 7-5, 7-5. Unfortunately the men’s doubles had to be postponed due to illness.

Some high quality junior matches were played with hopefully many of them going on to be successful in senior tennis. The number of juniors involved is a great indicator of the club’s future which is looking very healthy.

Backwell Tennis Club boy’s under-14 team won the Division 1 of the Avon Junior Winter Tennis League, beating a number of teams across Bristol and Bath to seal their victory.

The team (left to right): Ben Pope, Tommy Simpson, Joe Wild and Alex Faulkner fought off some tough competition in both singles and doubles matches.

Fergus Yard this year has represented Avon at the under-9 County Cup, which they won, and was also first and runner-up in his age group at the 100th Burnham-on-Sea Open County Championships.

The team didn’t lose a single rubber beating Wiltshire, Gloucester, South Wales, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight on their way to success.

Fergus first fell in love with tennis at an event Backwell Tennis Club organised five years ago to celebrate the completion of the club’s new fifth court.

A week later, for what seemed a logical present fifth birthday, he had a new racquet and started at one of the after school clubs organised by club coach Ben Tilling.

Backwell Tennis Club is proud of the coaching programme it has built up over the last few years, particularly for juniors, and has now produced some exciting players.

Tilling and his coaching team have worked tirelessly to achieve this standard with children from as young as three years old through to performance coaching up to 18.
