Backwell Tennis Club held its tournament finals weekend with more than 30 matches being played.

A fantastic feast of tennis was held at Backwell Tennis Club tournaments finals weekend.

More than 30 finals matches were played from girls’ and boy’s eight and under, to the seniors over-60s, with some brilliant and highly competitive matches.

The ladies’ singles match lasted more than three and a half hours with the first game taking nearly 25 minutes to complete. The match was eventually won by Alison Simpson beating Jude Barker, the winner for the last two years, in three sets. Ice baths needed after that match.

A new name was also added to the men’s singles trophy as 16-year-old Tom Jackson beat Huw Solari in two sets of high quality tennis, with two of the club’s young coaches showing how tennis should be played.

Men’s doubles winners were Stuart Beaver and Henry Holt, while the ladies’ doubles winners were Jude Barker and Zoe Fearnley

Some quality junior matches were watched by a good crowd of nervous parents and club members. The club is in a vhealthy state with the enthusiasm and competitiveness shown by all the juniors taking part.

Junior results: Girls’ eight and under singles: Leilah Urquart; nine: Pippa Payne: 10: Hannah Payne; 12: Hannah Payne; 14: Emily Sparks; 16: Elin Beaver.

Boys eight and under singles: Zente Gottlieb; 9: Fergus Yard; 10: Fergus Yard 12: Reeve Hill; 14: Ben Pope; 16: Henry Keattch.

Girls 12 and under doubles: Lauren Beaver & Amy Blackman; 14: Elin Beaver & Emily Sparks; 16: Anya Hollowood & Sophie Parfitt.

Boys 12 and under doubles: Tom Walker & Reeve Hill; 14: Joe Wild & Joe Keattch; 16: Henry Keattch & Jack Bidgood; mixed 16 and under doubles: Elin Beaver & Jack Bidgood.

Other results – ladies’ singles plate: Jess Kitley; doubles plate: Jenni Sparks & Emily Sparks. Men’s singles plate: Charlie Bates; doubles plate: Tim Fowler & Tom Fowler.

Ladies’ 50+ doubles: Teresa Norman & Liz Walker; men’s: Peter Mann & Tony Kitley. Mixed 50+ doubles: Teresa Norman & Peter Mann. Random doubles: Steve Brooks & Rob Stubbs. Random 60+ doubles: Steve Brooks & Will Power.

The 12 and under boy’s team celebrated winning the Division 2 Avon Junior Winter League by winning 61 per cent of more than 540 games played against strong teams from across the region.
