Backwell Tennis Club have enjoyed a busy and successful season,

Backwell Tennis Club has enjoyed another busy and successful summer.

The junior coaching has seen many new mini tennis players, aged four to eight, joining and an increase in the schools coaching programme.

The continuation of the schools coaching at six schools has been possible due to the funding from Avon LTA with more than 500 children receiving free taster tennis sessions with coaching times also being given to sports week at the schools.

The children who wanted to carry on playing were offered places in the club coaching programme and some invited to participate in senior club play. The funding has also been used to run the after-school clubs.

Four work experience students from local schools were accepted, showing once again how the club is supporting the community through the coaching programme led by head coach Ben Tilling and his team of five qualified coaches.

The adult coaching programme has also been in great demand with many of the participants now active in club play and gaining places in the league teams.

The complete coaching programme at Backwell is quite unique, recognised as such by the LTA, at a time when participation is on the way down and coaches are leaving the sport.

The club is bringing on more and more adults and juniors who want to play while developing coaches in larger numbers than ever. Great credit goes to Ben and his team for all their hard work in achieving this.

The coaching success has benefited the league play with the promotion of four summer senior league teams.

The Avon men’s first team were undefeated to finish top of Division 4A. In the North Somerset League, three teams were promoted – the ladies B team finished second in Division 6, the men’s B team finished top in Division. 4 and the men’s D team were undefeated and finished top of Division. 8.

The club also runs a summer-long tournament for all senior and junior members culminating in a fantastic finals weekend, which this year is being held on September 8-9.

This is possibly the largest club tournament in the South West with more than 30 finals matches from girls and boys aged eight and under to the seniors over-60s.

Visitors are more than welcome to come, watch and enjoy what will be entertaining, competitive and high quality tennis. Refreshments will also be available.

The club welcomes anyone interested in playing tennis. The next coaching programmes for children aged four to 16 and adults will be starting on September 3.
