A 2-1 win against Fry Club First, who are in competition for promotion, topped off a wonderful week for Wrington Redhill in their battle to escape relegation.

The management team picked up their tight squad of players after the heavy 9-1 defeat of the previous week to get them back focused on the games ahead, including a hard fought 1-0 win against Keynsham Town earlier in the week.

The result still leaves Wrington in the relegation zone with 20 points, but they are now four points away from safety with two games yet to play.

However, Illminster, the team sat just above the drop zone, have two games in hand against Wrington meaning the redskins will have to win and then wait for other fixtures to decide their fate at the end of the season.

There was an evident contrast in styles between the teams on Saturday, with Fry’s playing very directly whilst Wrington Redhill kept to their short, sharp passing game.

The home side were rewarded early when Travis Yule-Turner split the defence with a pass that put Joe Creese through one on one with keeper Callum Fry who parried the first effort, but Creese made no mistake with the rebound and slotted home for his 10th goal of the season.

This goal spurred on the team who dominated the game at this point, but further goals eluded them despite Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi causing so much threat through link up play with Josh Pitt and Sam Harvey.

Fry’s equalised against the run of play when a long range shot from defender Sam Knight took a wicked deflection and whizzed past Regan D’Arcy in goal, making the score line at half time 1-1.

The restart saw Fry’s up their efforts but the Wrington Redhill back line of Ollie Clements, Dan Ferguson, Ethan Johnson, and Jordon Bonne limited Fry’s attack, with their only strike of note cannoning off the crossbar.

Good work from the tenacious Max Smith who sat right in front of the defence also allowed the front players to create rapid counter attacks.

Fry’s were struggling to contain the pressing and running power of Ferguson-Obamwonyi, Yule-Turner, Harvey, Pitt and Creese and were committing numerous fouls, but none could be capitalised on by Wrington.

That is until the last minute of the game when another free kick was won just left of centre, outside the penalty box.

Up stepped Harvey and, as cool as you like, produced one of his trademark strikes into the top right corner with the Fry players looking on in bewilderment.

A wonder strike to seal the game 2-1 and confirm the desperately needed three points.

Now back in touch with the teams immediately above them the pressure builds further with four games ahead which will continue to test the strength of character of the squad.

This has been shown so far in the last few games and will need to be maintained as Wrington try to prove they can compete at this level in the County league and stave off the drop.
