Backwell Tennis Club’s annual championships weekend went ahead as planned recently.

It was a great opportunity for club and community to come together at a difficult time after the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth, which was marked by a minute’s silence on both days to remember the late monarch who served 70 years on the throne.

The weather across the weekend was fantastic, and so was the quality of the tennis.

A total of 27 finals were held over the two days in what is one of our region’s largest tennis tournaments.

Matches ranged from the under-8s to over-60s there was plenty of tennis to watch, along with a free BBQ and refreshments.

In the Men’s Singles, youth overcame experience with the title won by teenage sensation and defending champion, Joe Wild, who defeated the 2018 winner Stuart Beaver in straight sets, with a display of ferocious hitting.

Youth also won the day in the Ladies’ Singles, with a new champion crowned, teenager Emily Sparks, who won a hard fought three-set victory over Zoe Fearnley.

The Men’s Doubles victors were Wild and Ben Pope, with Zoe Fearnley and Jude Barker taking the Ladies’ Doubles title. Wild capped an incredible weekend with victory in the last match on Sunday, winning the Mixed Doubles title with his mother, Julie.

In the boys singles, the under-16s was won by Zente Gottileb and the Girls’ Singles, under-16s was claimed by Hannah Payne.

As always the amazing talent on display across the whole junior age range was a real highlight.
