SO WHAT is Wrington Rotary Club and what does it do?
It is part of a worldwide organisation made up of some 32,000 clubs in 200 countries.
In the UK alone there are 1,835 clubs with a membership of 59,000 of which Wrington Vale is one, with a membership of 39. The club still has four of its founder members from 1976.
Over the last five years the club has raised almost 61,000, which has been donated to a wide range of deserving local and international projects.
Regular fund-raisers include an annual beer festival in September, a jazz and blues celebration in July and a charity dinner in January.
This years agenda includes a frog race night.
The club has four main committees, international, youth activities, community and vocational, and club service. Every member of the club sits on one of the committees and meet, discuss and promote various projects and ideas to benefit the community.
Their decisions are then presented to the club as a whole for approval.
Over the last few years the club has provided survival and Water Aid boxes to the worlds disaster areas, collected childrens books for youngsters in Africa, collected old spectacles which were then forwarded to Third World countries, provided support for a school to be built for children in a leper colony in India, provided three double skinned fishing boats to Sri Lanka, and offered financial support to Mercy ships which berth in various locations around Africa to perform medical operations.
It is currently helping a school in the middle of Africa which has no toilet facilities.
Closer to home, the club provides support to schools through its Kids Out Day, by holding mock interviews and running a Youth Speaks competition.
The club also supports the Winscombe Village Green celebrations, organises parties and trips out for the elderly and organises weekend stopovers for children at Charterhouse to give them some relief from being sole supporters of disabled or infirm parents.
It is through the fellowship enjoyed through these and other, purely social, events that the enthusiasm and commitment of members is maintained.
