WITH a green renowned as the best in Somerset, Winscombe Bowling Club is described as one of the village's 'best kept secrets'.
With an active ladies' section and a well-established men's section, members are constantly out and about playing matches throughout the season, which runs from April to September.
They also play in the Somerset County League and host several matches against visiting touring teams.
The ladies' section has entered the newly-formed North Somerset Triples League, as well as having its own internal league.
The club also holds a highly-successful annual Open Triples Day Tournament every July, as well as an equally-popular Floodlit Competition for four weeks in August and September.
A weekly meet at the club in Well Close also doubles up as a social occasion in between the friendly matches on the rink.
Players also organise a number of social events throughout the year including an annual pig roast and jazz night, quizzes, Burns night and Christmas parties.
Club member Lorna Whatling said: "A lot of members believe the club is one of Winscombe's best-kept secrets.
"I think anyone who is interested in bowling should come along and give it a go.
"It might not be something for everyone but there is a good fellowship between members and the social side is brilliant.
"Some people like to compete at a high level, whereas other members just enjoy bowling as more of a hobby.
"We would like to attract some younger people to the club, as a lot of the country's best bowlers are in their late teens, twenties or thirties.
"We have equipment for newcomers to the game and there are many experienced players who would be happy to provide guidance.
"This really is a wonderful sport and a game of skill, which I have found quite addictive."
Anyone interested in taking up the sport is invited along to the Monday Club Nights before the outdoor season ends.
